REM (Rapid Eye Mount) is a 60 cm diameter fast reacting telescope located in the La Silla premises of the ESO Chilean Observatory (29°15′S and 70°44′W).
The telescope hosts two instruments: REMIR, an infrared imaging camera, and ROS2, a visibile imager with 4 simultaneous passbands. The two cameras can also observe simultaneously thanks to a dichroic placed before telescope focus the same field of view of 10x10 arcmin. Thus, 5 images are obtained at the same time: g,r,i,z,IR.
The Observatory is operated for INAF by the d'REM Team, a delocalized group of people.
February 26, 2026. The REM team wants to honour Scott Barthelmy. He was, among many other things, the father of the GCN system we still use today. Having learned of his passing yesterday, we want to remember him as a person who was always available, smiling, and humble. When we were establishing a structure to handle GRB alerts in real-time at the birth of the REM project, he helped us whenever we needed it. It was a true privilege to work with him. Rest in peace, Scott.
25 Feb 2026 ◊ Infrared camera REMIR is not operating.
11 Dec 2025 ◊ REM operations are restored. Mirrors were successfully recoated, but possible misalignement in telescope pointing is still possible. Please report to info.rem@inaf.it if you encounter problems. Thank you for all cooperation.
28 Nov 2025 ◊ REM operatins are stopped. Major maintenance, including a brand new mirror coating, willl be finished by 10th December 2025.
08 Nov 2025 ◊ The dome problem is fixed. REM operations are restored. Thanks for your patience (and to the people who helped fixing).
